AMA adopts new AI policy

The American Medical Association has established a new policy that aims to increase transparency and trust in AI tools used in clinical care.

The policy was approved during the AMA’s annual meeting and requires that AI tools be explainable while providing clear and accessible reasoning for AI-generated results to healthcare professionals. This aims to help medical professionals better interpret AI recommendations and make informed decisions.

The AMA also called for an independent third party, such as a regulatory agency or medical society to verify the AI’s algorithm. The policy emphasizes that explainability should not replace the safety and efficacy assessments already in place, such as randomized clinical trials.

“With the proliferation of augmented intelligence tools in clinical care, we must push for greater transparency and oversight so physicians can feel more confident that the clinical tools they use are safe, based on sound science, and can be discussed appropriately with their patients when making shared decisions about their health care,” said Alexander Ding, MD, AMA board member.
