Alabama's Troy Regional Medical Center Reports Data Theft

Approximately 880 patients at Troy (Ala.) Regional Medical Center had some of their personal information improperly accesses and removed from the hospital, according to a hospital news release.

Patient data that was taken included name, address, date of birth, Social Security number and medical record number, the release said. TRMC learned of the data breach on May 20.

Both TRMC and local law enforcement officials are conducting investigations. The release said the stolen information may have been used to file fraudulent income tax returns.

The hospital has provided free identity protection to all affected individuals for one year.
