Aurora, Colo.-based UC Health and Denver-based University of Colorado studied the implementation of Abridge’s AI scribe — as it was happening.
The health system and university teamed up to analyze the live pilot of 250 ambulatory clinicians using the ambient documentation tool, making operational decisions in real time that directly impacted randomization and study validity.
“Through the rare combination of operational leadership, physician informatics leaders and a nimble research team, we could study a live deployment without breaking it,” CT Lin, MD, chief medical information officer of UCHealth, wrote in a May 27 blog post.
The researchers adapted the study design to be grounded in actual Epic EHR log data combined with physician and advanced practice provider satisfaction scores. UCHealth has since expanded Abridge to roughly 3,000 clinicians.
