HHS is signing onto President Donald Trump’s Genesis Mission, aligning departmentwide resources to apply AI to chronic disease research.
The effort centers on the NIH-led Bio Genesis Mission, which aims to cut in half the time it takes scientific discoveries to reach patients by applying AI and advanced computing to biomedical datasets, per a July 22 HHS news release. HHS agencies including NIH, the FDA and the Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health, aka ARPA-H, will contribute research, genomics, public health and safety data to the initiative, working alongside the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy.
HHS will unveil a series of challenges inviting researchers to apply AI to chronic disease, pediatric cancer and drug discovery and development. The chronic disease challenge is the flagship effort and ties into the Make America Healthy Again strategy that Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has prioritized.
“America will lead the next generation of medical discovery by harnessing the power of artificial intelligence,” Mr. Kennedy said in the release. “We are mobilizing the nation’s best researchers to uncover the root causes of chronic disease, accelerate lifesaving breakthroughs, and help Make America Healthy Again.”
NIH Director Jay Bhattacharya, MD, stated that the effort will help researchers move discoveries to patients faster “while upholding the rigorous scientific standards and responsible stewardship that earn the public’s trust.”
President Trump launched the Genesis Mission via executive order in November 2025 to harness AI, advanced computing and the national research enterprise to tackle major scientific challenges.
