HHS is restructuring its health technology leadership, reversing a 2024 reorganization, to centralize key roles under the agency’s chief information officer.
The move restores the pre-2024 departmentwide model by returning responsibility for enterprise IT, cybersecurity and data operations to the Office of the Chief Information Officer, according to a March 31 agency update. The agency is also removing the dual title for the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT to refocus the office on interoperability, standards and policy.
As part of the change, the chief technology officer, chief AI officer and chief data officer roles will shift back under the CIO. HHS said these leaders will be aligned across three core functions: technology innovation, AI oversight and data governance.
Agency officials said the restructuring is intended to improve coordination between policy and operations while advancing broader goals related to data liquidity, affordability and AI adoption across the healthcare system.
The Office of the National Coordinator will continue to report to the HHS secretary and collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to advance health IT policy, including the use of AI in clinical care.
