- CommonSpirit Health (Chicago) has approximately 250 active AI tools across its 150-plus hospitals — up from around 60 in fiscal year 2023 — generating more than $100 million in annual value. Its deployments include automated clinical notetaking, patient call processing and a sepsis surveillance tool that has contributed to reductions in sepsis-related mortality.
- Kaiser Permanente (Oakland, Calif.) has expanded AI scribes across 40 hospitals and eight states, making it one of the largest generative AI deployments in healthcare.
- Providence (Renton, Wash.) launched 12 Epic AI tools in April 2026, expanding its use of Epic’s ambient documentation, predictive analytics and administrative automation capabilities.
- Jefferson Health (Philadelphia) is testing ambient AI for nurses, exploring whether tools designed primarily for physicians can be adapted to nursing workflows across inpatient settings.
- Mayo Clinic (Rochester, Minn.) and Abridge are building AI specifically for nurses, addressing a gap in ambient documentation tools that have historically focused on physician use cases.
- WVU Medicine (Morgantown, W.Va.) is expanding Abridge to 2,800 clinicians across its system, one of the larger ambient AI deployments by a regional academic health system.
- FMOL Health (Baton Rouge, La.) was an early adopter of Epic’s ambient AI, deploying the tool ahead of widespread rollout and sharing learnings with other Epic customers.
- AdventHealth (Altamonte Springs, Fla.) deployed Nuance’s DAX Copilot ambient AI scribe to nearly 2,000 physicians and advanced practice providers. Among users, 86% report less burnout and 80% report a better patient experience.
- Sutter Health (Sacramento, Calif.) is turning AI into a people-first transformation engine, deploying tools that reduce administrative burden while keeping human oversight central to its strategy.
- Sanford Health (Sioux Falls, S.D.) found that ambient AI documentation significantly improved workforce satisfaction and retention. After using the technology for less than a year, 88% of clinicians reported a reduction in burnout or fatigue and 95% said it helped reduce mental strain.
AI agents and automation
- Advocate Health (Charlotte, N.C.) has tapped Epic’s AI Agent Factory, becoming one of the first health systems to deploy agents built through Epic’s new agentic AI development platform.
- Tampa General Hospital (Tampa, Fla.) was the first to deploy Epic’s “Ask Art” tool.
- Seattle Children’s developed a “phone a friend” AI agent for physicians that allows clinicians to consult an AI model mid-encounter for decision support without leaving the patient room.
- Penn Medicine (Philadelphia) announced plans in May to deploy AI clinical agents, targeting administrative and clinical workflow automation across its academic medical centers.
- Moffitt Cancer Center (Tampa, Fla.) caught an AI agent going off script early in its deployment, sharing lessons about governance and guardrails that other health systems are now applying to their own agent programs.
- CommonSpirit Health is also expanding its internally developed virtual AI agent to additional hospitals and 30 virtual command centers, replacing legacy phone trees and automating department and patient call-routing.
Clinical AI and diagnostics
- Cleveland Clinic is piloting EHR-integrated AI for inpatient nursing, using tools embedded directly in Epic to support nursing documentation and decision-making.
- Mount Sinai Health System (New York City) inked the first enterprise deal with OpenEvidence, a clinical AI platform that gives physicians instant access to evidence-based answers at the point of care. Mount Sinai has also developed an AI model that determines which atrial fibrillation patients benefit from blood thinners, recommending against anticoagulation in up to 50% of patients who would otherwise have received it.
- Vanderbilt Health (Nashville, Tenn.) rolled out its first patient-facing AI tool at scale in May 2026, making it one of the first major academic health systems to deploy consumer-facing AI beyond the portal or chatbot level.
- Hartford (Conn.) HealthCare launched a patient AI tool embedded in its EHR, giving patients access to AI-driven guidance directly within their health record environment.
- UCHealth (Aurora, Colo.) uses AI to monitor about 22,000 hospital beds through a virtual care center. With in-room cameras and AI embedded in Epic, a team of nurses virtually monitors medical-surgical and step-down beds across 14 hospitals for signs of sepsis.
- Yale New Haven (Conn.) Health employed an AI model called PanEcho for echocardiogram interpretation.
Financial and operational AI
- CommonSpirit Health expanded AI into financial operations through a partnership with Midstream, deploying a closed-loop AI system that surfaces missed rebates, underpayments and margin improvement opportunities in real time.
- Community Health Systems (Franklin, Tenn.) is using AI and ERP tools to protect margins, combining enterprise resource planning upgrades with AI-driven cost reduction across its hospital portfolio.
- UnitedHealth Group is spending $1.5 billion on AI in 2026, directing investments toward claims processing, prior authorization automation and care management across its Optum and UnitedHealthcare divisions.
- Optum expanded its Microsoft collaboration to add AI to its claims platform, and separately launched a new AI tool to support value-based care contracting and performance tracking.
- Intermountain Health (Salt Lake City) has approximately 300 AI projects underway, including a paradigm shift toward a tech-first revenue cycle. The system is also scaling responsible use of AI in supply chain forecasting and advancing AI-supported clinical decision tools within its EHR.

- Epic customers broadly — nearly two-thirds of Epic hospitals are now using ambient AI tools, according to January 2026 data, and Epic AI adoption has surpassed 85% of customers across its broader AI feature set.
- Oracle Health customers gained access to a new AI clinical note tool for inpatient and ED settings in March 2026, as Oracle continued expanding its clinical AI agent capabilities.
- Hillsboro (Ill.) Health announced plans to adopt Oracle EHR and AI tools in early 2026, one of several Oracle wins as the company positions its AI suite as a differentiator against Epic.
Enterprise AI partnerships
- Banner Health (Phoenix) rolled out BannerWise — a private chatbot powered by Anthropic’s Claude models — to more than 55,000 employees across its 33-hospital system, emerging as one of the first health systems to deploy Anthropic technology at enterprise scale.
- Hackensack Meridian Health (Edison, N.J.) was among the first U.S. health systems to deploy Google’s Gemini-based AI agent at scale, and has since launched two additional AI agents built on Google Cloud’s Gemini 2.5 platform to support clinicians and improve patient communication.
- University of Maryland Medical System (Baltimore) is leveraging AI and other technologies to automate routine work, augment staff and focus on scalable design as its primary AI strategy for 2026.
- Memorial Hermann Health System (Houston) is launching AI-enabled remote care services through a new partnership, as part of a broader strategy to redeploy staff whose duties are being automated.
AI in nursing and virtual care
- Parkview Health (Fort Wayne, Ind.) deployed Care.ai for virtual nursing and virtual sitting, and Abridge for ambient documentation — not as experiments, but as operational programs with defined outcome targets. By January 2026, the system was processing 3 million AI tokens per month, up from 60,000 just months earlier.
- UC Irvine Health (Orange, Calif.) moved from limited pilots to broad access, deploying AI tools across all areas of care delivery — ambulatory, ED and inpatient — in 2025 and into 2026.
- Mercy (Chesterfield, Mo.) has achieved measurable productivity gains from generative AI and automation, including reduced clinician documentation time and streamlined revenue cycle processes, according to CIO Scott Richert.
- BJC Health (St. Louis) is prioritizing digital innovation in 2026 with AI and connected systems, according to Chief Information and Digital Officer Jerry Fox, following the organization’s 2024 merger of BJC HealthCare and Saint Luke’s Health System.
- Franciscan Health (Mishawaka, Ind.) is focused in 2026 on transitioning generative AI from experimentation to sustainable, trusted execution at scale, according to CIO Charles Wagner.
AI in specialty care and research
- Mount Sinai Health System is pursuing a dedicated pharmacy AI strategy, applying AI to medication management and clinical pharmacy workflows across its New York City campuses.
- Kaiser Permanente launched the KP Intelligent Navigator, an AI and digital health tool designed to enhance the patient experience, guide patients to the right care setting and streamline care operations across its integrated model.
- CommonSpirit Health deployed a neuro emergency triage tool across more than 50 facilities, cutting door-to-treatment time by more than 40% — one of its more clinically significant AI outcomes to date.
- City of Hope (Duarte, Calif.) rolled out HopeLLM, a proprietary generative AI platform built on the cancer center’s extensive oncology data. The tool generates clinician-ready summaries for referred and new patients, dramatically reducing the time spent reviewing records and flagging potential care friction such as missing documentation or inconsistencies that could delay scheduling.
AI in revenue cycle
- Tampa General Hospital described 2026 as the age of AI agents in revenue cycle, with its revenue cycle chief saying the technology is no longer theoretical but fully operational.
- CommonSpirit Health uses AI and robotic process automation for talent acquisition, automating candidate screening and pre-screening interviews before routing top candidates to human recruiters.
- Universal Health Services (King of Prussia, Pa.) has deployed more than 50 AI applications across its enterprise spanning clinical care, revenue cycle and business operations. AI-driven revenue cycle automation has reduced manual work, accelerated claims processing and improved collections, with some initiatives reducing expenses by more than $1 million and driving revenue increases in the tens of millions.
AI governance and strategy
- Parkview Health established an AI steering committee to manage model updates, monitor for bias or drift and ensure tools continue functioning safely — a governance model other systems are now replicating.
- CommonSpirit Health launched an AI Workforce Readiness Academy 18 months ago, reskilling and upskilling several thousand employees whose roles are being affected by AI and automation, with a goal of preserving jobs and redeploying talent rather than eliminating it.
- Texas Children’s Hospital (Houston) built a formal AI governance framework that evaluates tools for safety, effectiveness and ethical alignment before deployment, with transparency requirements built into clinical tools so clinicians can see how AI-generated conclusions are reached.
