9 top-paying states, metro areas for medical records and health information technicians

Medical records and health information technicians earn a yearly wage of $40,430 on average in the United States, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

In all, there are around 189,930 medical records and health information technicians in the country.

Here are the five top-paying states for the profession:

•    New Jersey — $60,310
•    Alaska — $52,040
•    California — $48,590
•    Maryland — $47,930

Here are the five top-paying metropolitan areas for the profession:

•    Newark, N.J.-Pa. — $66,710
•    San Jose-Sunnyvale-Santa Clara, Calif.  — $62,270
•    Oakland-Hayward-Berkeley, Calif. — $58,830
•    San Francisco-Redwood City-South San Francisco, Calif. — $55,480
•    Silver Spring-Frederick-Rockville, Md. — $54,740
