7 statistics on EHR adoption since 2009

In 2009, just 12 percent of US hospitals had a basic EHR system, according to the ONC’s annual report to Congress.

Since then, EHR adoption has increased dramatically. At the end of 2013:

  • 59 percent of U.S. hospitals had at least a basic EHR system
  • 94 percent of hospitals possessed certified EHR technology, an increase of 30 percent from 2011, when 72 percent of hospitals had a certified system.
  • 89 percent of critical access hospitals used an EHR system, and 49 percent of CAHs planned to either install or upgrade their system within a year
  • 92 percent of hospitals have received at least one payment under the EHR incentive programs
