Where is Healthcare Coverage Costliest? 10 Most Expensive Insurance Exchange Markets

Kaiser Health News recently published a list of the 10 most expensive markets in the country for health insurance coverage, based on the average monthly premium for a 40 year old enrolled in a silver exchange-based health plan.

The costliest market? Colorado's ski region, including the counties surrounding Aspen and Vail. According to KHN, the high premium costs reflect higher-than-average healthcare costs for the regions. For example, in one Colorado county, the average cost of an inpatient stay was 61 percent above the state average.

Here are the 10 regions with the most expensive healthcare insurance premiums:

1. Colorado Mountain Resort Region  — $483
2. Southwest Georgia — $461 Ba
3. Rural Nevada — $456
4. Far Western Wisconsin — $445
5. Southern Georgia — $423
6. Wyoming — $405 (average includes all counties except Natrona and Laramie)
7. Southeast Mississippi — $399
8. Vermont — $395 (average does not reflect cost for 40-year-old as Vermont does not allow premiums based on age)
9. Fairfield, Connecticut —$383
