Washington Gov. Bob Ferguson has signed a bill to remove medical debt from credit score reporting.

The bill, which takes effect July 27, prohibits collection agencies from reporting medical debt to credit agencies, according to an April 22 news release from the Washington Senate Democrats.

A study from the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society found that 60% of Washington adults said they could not pay an unexpected $500 medical bill and 30% said they live in a household with medical debt — even with health insurance, according to the release.
