VA won’t dole out more punishment as Denver hospital triples expected construction costs

Following the long-awaited results of an internal review, the Department of Veterans Affairs says it has no plans to punish any other employees over massive cost overruns at a veterans medical center under construction outside of Denver, reports KRDO.

The new hospital in suburban Aurora, Colo., is expected to cost $1.7 billion, nearly three times the estimated amount for construction in 2014. In the report issued Tuesday, VA investigators blamed cost overruns on multiple design changes and a decision by VA officials to use a complicated contracting agreement that wasn’t fully understood.

Three VA employees were previously reassigned or demoted over the construction problems.

Tuesday’s announcement angered some members of Congress who have demanded those workers responsible be fired or disciplined, according to the article.
