UPMC posts $45.6M operating income in Q3 after loss last year

Pittsburgh-based UPMC reported an operating income of $45.6 million (0.5% operating margin) in the third quarter of 2025, up from an operating loss of $57.6 million (-0.7% margin) during the same period last year, according to its Nov. 25 financial report. 

Five things to know:

1. UPMC reported total operating revenue of $8.5 billion for the three months ended Sept. 30, up from $7.7 billion during the same period last year. Net patient service revenue totaled $3.3 billion in the quarter, up from $3.1 billion last year. Insurance enrollment revenue was $4.4 billion, up from $3.8 billion. 

2. Total operating expenses were $8.5 billion for the quarter, up from $7.8 billion in 2024. Salaries, professional fees and employee benefits totaled $2.7 billion, up from $2.5 billion. Insurance claim expenses were $3.2 billion, up from $2.9 billion. Supplies, purchased services and general expenses were $2.3 billion in the quarter, up from $2.1 billion last year.  

3. In the third quarter of 2024, UPMC incurred $20.1 million in restructuring costs. The system did not incur any restructuring costs in the third quarter this year.   

4. Through a joint venture with GoHealth Urgent Care, UPMC established 81 urgent care centers in Pennsylvania and West Virginia in the third quarter of 2025. The network incorporates former MedExpress, UPMC Urgent Care and UPMC Express Care locations in Pennsylvania. In West Virginia, all former MedExpress sites transitioned to UPMC-GoHealth centers.

5. UPMC reported a net income of $179.3 million in the third quarter, up from $94.5 million during the same period in 2024.
