Louisville, Ky.-based UofL Health is laying off 1% of its workforce — about 150 employees — as part of a broader effort to streamline operations and “modernize” care delivery, the health system confirmed in a statement provided to Becker’s.
UofL Health said the move “will help leverage the strengths and opportunities as a system, by removing duplication to ensure continued investment in patient care, our people and our communities.”
Affected employees have been offered the opportunity to transfer into open roles elsewhere in the organization. UofL Health did not specify which positions were affected or whether any patient-facing roles were included in the layoffs.
The restructuring comes shortly after UofL Health named Jason Smith, MD, PhD, as CEO, effective Oct. 16. Dr. Smith previously served as interim CEO in June and was the system’s chief medical officer before that. He succeeded Tom Miller, who served as UofL Health’s inaugural CEO since its formation in 2018.
The health system employs more than 1,200 providers and operates nine hospitals, four medical centers, the Brown Cancer Center and the Eye Institute, along with 250 locations across Kentucky and Southern Indiana.
