Funding to reform Alabama’s Medicaid program has been a contentious issue in the state’s legislature over the past couple years. The start date of the program’s overhaul was delayed from October 2016 to October of this year due to lawmakers’ debates about how to fund the program.

Will Ferniany, CEO of UAB Health System, told AL.com lawmakers should further delay the October 2017 start date to evaluate loopholes allowing out-of-state Medicaid managed care companies to participate in Alabama’s market.

While large hospitals like UAB and University of South Alabama Health System have postponed plans to create regional care organizations as part of the reform, some hospitals are sticking with the program, according to the report. DCH Hospital in Tuscaloosa and Huntsville Hospital are looking for Medicaid reform to begin in October, according to the report.
