West Reading, Pa.-based Tower Health laid off less than 0.5% of total employee headcount on June 26, including management-level roles, across the system, according to a July 7 statement shared with Becker’s.

The layoffs also included vacant positions that will not be filled. Tower Health comprises 10,000 employees across its four hospitals, according to its website

“Although Tower Health’s financial position has strengthened, we remain focused on driving continuous improvement across our system,” the statement said. “As part of this commitment, we identified several areas where we can enhance operations by streamlining and optimizing organizational structures throughout our healthcare system.”

Transitioning benefits and job-placement assistance are being offered to affected employees. Care will not be affected due to these changes.

In January, Michael Stern, now president and CEO of Tower Health, told Becker’s he is focused on financial sustainability for the health system, including a three-year strategic plan and the “Tower Experience” initiative, aimed at improving the experience for those interacting within the system.

In early June, Brian Rayme was named executive vice president and CFO of Tower Health. Mr. Rayme replaced Mike Eesley, who exited retirement in 2021 to serve as the health system’s inaugural chief transformation officer and transitioned to CFO in early 2023. Mr. Eesley now serves as executive vice president and chief transformation officer.
