Funding for the organization is currently in jeopardy. Numerous Republican congressional members seek to block Medicaid funding for Planned Parenthood, which covers services such as screening and treatment for cancers and sexually transmitted diseases, but not abortions, according to the article.
Gov. Baker on Friday pledged the state would step up if this Medicaid funding went away.
“Gov. Baker is a strong supporter of women’s health and believes the commonwealth has a responsibility to ensure access to the important healthcare services offered by Planned Parenthood in all corners of our state,” Gov. Baker spokeswoman Lizzy Guyton said in a statement, according to Reuters. “The administration is prepared to fund these services should the federal government pursue changes that would block care for women and families here in Massachusetts.”
Planned Parenthood said in the report about $2 million of its $21.5 million budget in Massachusetts comes from Medicaid reimbursements.
