Healthcare billing in Puerto Rico still difficult following Hurricane Maria: 4 notes

Puerto Rico's slow recovery from Hurricane Maria has made healthcare billing a greater challenge, according to ICD10monitor.

Here are four notes.

1. Hurricane Maria wreaked havoc on the U.S. territory in September.

2. About 10 weeks later, Puerto Ricans continue to struggle with basic needs, according to Lorraine  Martinez with healthcare billing and reimbursement company Inmediata.

3. Ms. Martinez told ICD10monitor, "It's been over two months … and 42 percent of citizens are struggling with lack of electricity and hundreds of thousands still do not have running water. A great amount of our citizens are still relying on generators, because it is uncertain when power will come back. The same is true for hospitals and other medical institutions."

4. In her interview with the publication, she also pointed out billing challenges, saying a generator "is still essential to our daily work" and that employees of her company "are still working on a business continuity plan." She noted her company's sales department has also reached out to clients in the medical billing industry to help make the billing process more efficient.
