10 grants, donations to healthcare organizations in November

Numerous healthcare organizations recently received donations to fund research, advance treatments, improve patient care or start renovations in the past month.

Here are 10 donations, grants or gifts given to healthcare organizations by various entities in November, beginning with the most recent.

1. College student inadvertently raises over $50k for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital with viral tweet
Danni Messina hoped to raise some money for Memphis, Tenn.-based St. Jude Children's Research Hospital when she posted a tweet Saturday, but she did not expect the post to go viral and draw more than $50,000 in donations.  

2. Trump pledges Q3 salary to fight opioid crisis
President Donald Trump Thursday pledged his third quarter presidential salary to HHS to help the agency fight the opioid epidemic.

3. U of Kansas Medical Center receives $1M to endow professorship
Kansas City-based University of Kansas Medical Center received a $1 million donation from two alumni to endow a professorship. 

4. Logan Regional Hospital receives $5M donation to enhance cancer care services
Logan (Utah) Regional Hospital, which is part of Salt Lake City-based Intermountain Healthcare, received a $5 million donation Monday to enhance cancer care.  

5. Irving family presents record $700M bequest to NewYork-Presbyterian, Columbia University
NewYork-Presbyterian and Columbia University, both located in New York City, received a $700 million bequest from Florence Irving and her late husband Herbert Irving — the largest gift in the academic medical institution's history. 

6. U of Arizona, National Jewish Health receive $8.5M grant to improve asthma care
Tucson-based University of Arizona Health Sciences and Denver-based National Jewish Health received an $8.5 million grant from the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute to improve asthma care for the Navajo Nation in Arizona. 

7. U of Texas renames nursing school after receiving record-breaking donation
Houston-based University of Texas Health Sciences Center renamed its nursing school Wednesday after a record-breaking $25 million donation.

8. U of Utah Hospital receives $5.3M gift from local family to advance diabetes treatment
Salt Lake City-based University of Utah Hospital received a $5.3 million donation from the Lary H. and Gail Miller Family Foundation to advance a diabetes prevention initiative. 

9. U of Arizona Cancer Center receives $2M to study selenium supplementation
The Tucson-based University of Arizona Cancer Center received a $2 million grant from the National Institutes of Health to advance research on selenium supplementation, a type of dietary supplement, to clarify conflicting information about its link to cancer risk.  

10. UT Health professor receives $2.6M award for brain research
Vasanthi Jayaraman, PhD, a professor at Houston-based McGovern Medical School at University of Texas Health received the Maximizing Investigator's Research Award, which includes a $2.6 million grant, to advance brain research.
