The codes allow for better tracking and data reporting by distinguishing the vaccine from others.The AMA published the new CPT codes so that electronic systems throughout the country can be prepared should Novavax’s vaccine receive the FDA’s emergency use authorization soon.
The new Category I CPT code for Novavax’s vaccine is 91304.
The vaccine was also issued two vaccine administration CPT codes for its two-dose regimen. The first dose’s code is 0041A, and the second dose’s code is 0042A.
Novavax CEO Stanley Erck said March 1 the vaccine could be granted emergency use authorization by the FDA as early as May.
Novavax’s vaccine candidate joins four other COVID-19 vaccines that have their own CPT codes. The AMA issued CPT codes for both the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines Nov. 10. AstraZeneca was issued new codes Dec. 17, and Johnson & Johnson was issued new codes Jan. 19.
