Grafton, N.D.-based Unity Medical Center is planning a $12 million addition to its 60-year-old hospital, according to The Bemidji Pioneer.

The project calls for a three-story addition, a larger operating department, improved patient rooms, and a space for education and training programs. The current two-story hospital, which will be repurposed into office space, houses an operating department, patient rooms, and physical therapy and rehab services.

“[The current building] served the community well, but you need to keep up in this business,” Unity Medical Center CEO Alan O’Neil told The Bemidji Pioneer. “It’s a very competitive business and we needed to modernize.  Healthcare is a lot different than what it was 60 years ago.”

The medical center is expected to break ground on the project by fall 2018. Construction could be completed in late 2019.
