St. Mary's Hospital to shut down life center: 4 things to know

St. Mary's Medical Center in Grand Junction, Colo., will close its life center pool and gymnasium Nov. 19, according to a Grand Junction Daily Sentinel report.

Here are four things to know about the closure.

1. The hospital attributed the closure to an increased focus on medical and surgical care, as well as cost-cutting measures. St. Mary's spokeswoman Teri Cavanaugh told Grand Junction Daily Sentinel the life center is subsidized by the rest of the hospital and is growing only more expensive with age.

2. By the time the life center's doors close, hospital officials hope to help the 1,500 clients who may use the facility to find other locations, according to the report. They also want to help the nine people who work at the life center find new jobs.

3. The ultimate goal with the closure is "to deliver cost savings back to the community and help us ratchet back healthcare costs," according to Ms. Cavanaugh.

4. With the closure, St. Mary's also will no longer fund the Mesa County Valley School District 51 athletic training program past this academic year and will try to find another organization to provide that help to the district, according to the report.
