St. David's Surgical Hospital unveils new upscale hospital

Rooftop gardens, a wood-fired brick oven and lavish patient rooms are just some of the amenities offered at the newly opened St. David's Surgical Hospital in Austin, Texas, according to the Austin Business Journal.

Austin-based St. David's HealthCare opened the facility Wednesday. The health system bought the building for $115 million in May from the Forest Park Medical Center system of physician-owned hospitals, which later slid into financial trouble and filed for bankruptcy protection in early 2016. The acquisition was part of a larger $275 million expansion effort by the health system, which also said at the time it planned to enlarge two of its existing hospitals and build a freestanding emergency room.

The new surgical hospital, which is filled with $20 million worth of technology and furniture, also has "unusually spacious patient rooms, high-end furnishings, gourmet food choices and the latest in technology," said Allen Harrison, CEO of St. David's North Austin Medical Center, according to the report. It is 141,381 square feet and has 40 inpatient rooms, 10 operating suites, facilities for pre-operation and post-operation care, a six-bed intensive care unit and imaging, pharmacy and lab services.

St. David's Surgical Hospital will house an ER but will focus primarily on non-emergency procedures, such as orthopedic, neurological, bariatric, gynecological and urological surgeries. It will likely shift some routine surgeries from St. David's North Austin Medical Center.
