NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan to get $52M for infrastructure improvements

New York City-based NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan, a full-service community hospital in Manhattan's East Harlem, will receive a $52 million capital investment for infrastructure improvement projects, the city's mayor, Bill de Blasio, announced Dec. 21.

"We are proud to have the largest public hospital system in the nation," the mayor said. "NYC Heath + Hospitals/Metropolitan has been a mainstay in this community for decades, and this investment will help the hospital get the upgrades needed to continue serving the community."

Project plans include upgrading the automatic fire sprinkler infrastructure ($12 million); replacing patient-accessible windows in behavioral health units ($13 million); improving the emergency power system ($25 million); and replacing the roof ($1 million). Plans also include replacing cooling towers ($400,000), as well as replacing the Medium Pressure Steam Condensate System unit ($600,000)

The city is funding the projects, slated for completion in phases, with some expected to be ready by spring. Other projects aren't expected to be completed until 2021.
