12 hospital construction projects worth $1B or more in 2018

In 2018, 12 hospitals and health systems announced or unveiled facility expansions and renovations with price tags of $1 billion or more.

1. Sutter Health's $2.1B campus to open in March
Sacramento, Calif.-based Sutter Health plans to open its $2.1 billion hospital campus next March, a few months ahead of schedule.

2. Georgia approves $1.5B Children's Healthcare of Atlanta hospital: 3 notes
Georgia approved Children's Healthcare of Atlanta's certificate of need application to replace the 325-bed children's hospital in Atlanta with a larger one containing 446 beds, also in Atlanta.

3. City approves part of UPMC's $2B expansion plan
The Pittsburgh Planning Commission approved on Oct. 23 UPMC's plan to build a vision and rehabilitation hospital in Pittsburgh as part of the system's $2 billion expansion.

4. JPS Health Network seeks $800M toward $1.2B in campus upgrades
Fort Worth, Texas-based Tarrant County Hospital District, which does business as JPS Health Network, is seeking voter approval for an $800 million bond proposal that would fund more than $1.2 billion in hospital upgrades.

5. Colorado VA hospital to open $1B over budget after 5-year delay
Although it's five-years behind schedule and $1 billion over budget, the Rocky Mountain Regional VA Medical Center opened to outpatients July 27 and inpatients Aug. 4. The cost of the project was $1.7 billion.

6. Atrium Health to spend $1B on capital projects: 6 things to know
Charlotte, N.C.-based Atrium Health plans to spend more than $1 billion to upgrade and expand several facilities in its network, representing the largest capital investment in the health system's history.

7. Banner Health has $1.7B worth of construction projects in the works

8. NewYork-Presbyterian unveils $1.1B ambulatory care center
New York City-based NewYork-Presbyterian completed construction April 24 of its David H. Koch Center, a $1.1 billion ambulatory care facility in Manhattan that will soon be home to a women and children's hospital.

9. Texas Medical Center unveils plan for 30-acre medical research campus: 8 things to know
Houston-based Texas Medical Center unveiled plans April 23 for a sweeping medical research campus that brings together five of the state's powerhouse research institutions. While leaders of the five founding institutions have yet to disclose the project's price tag, it's estimated to cost $1.5 billion.

10. Indiana University Health prepares for $1B transformation
Indianapolis-based Indiana University Health is preparing to start a major consolidation project, expected to cost $1 billion.

11. UC San Francisco to construct $1.5B hospital with support from record $500M donation
UC San Francisco unveiled plans Feb. 8 to build a $1.5 billion replacement hospital, supported by a record-breaking $500 million commitment.

12. Part of a $1B expansion project: BJC Healthcare unveils 12-story patient tower
As part of a planned $1 billion transformation project, St. Louis-based BJC Healthcare unveiled its 12-story inpatient tower at St. Louis-based Barnes-Jewish Hospital and an expansion of St. Louis Children's Hospital Jan. 19.
