Mission Health gears up $46M hospital

Asheville, N.C.-based Mission Health unveiled parts of its new McDowell Hospital in Marion, N.C., on Tuesday, according to the Asheville Citizen-Times.

The health system determined the cost of renovating the existing hospital was comparable to building a new hospital, which will be adjacent to the existing location. The new McDowell Hospital is part of Mission's larger goal, which includes a $400 million Hospital for Advanced Medicine in Asheville and upgrades to the Highlands-Cashiers (N.C.) Hospital and Transylvania Regional Hospital in Brevard, N.C.

The $46 million facility includes upgraded birthing suites, exam rooms, emergency room beds and technology, such as the MRI machine. The new hospital is expected to maintain the nearly 400 employees who serve the existing McDowellHospital.

The new hospital is expected to open in approximately three months. The outgoing McDowell Hospital is scheduled to be demolished in September 2018 and will become a parking lot for the new building.
