Nonprofit ophthalmology organization Orbis International has converted a Boeing MD-10 into the world's only flying eye hospital, according to CNBC.
The plane has nine modular compartments that include space to train students in new eye surgery techniques as well as clinical areas to actually perform the surgeries. Orbis flies the plane to developing countries to educate local clinicians and operate on residents.
Orbis first flew its eye hospital in a Boeing DC-8 in 1982. Over the last five years, they have trained more than 10,000 physicians around the world and performed nearly 350,000 eye surgeries.
