The 245,000-square-foot facility, which will be located immediately east of the main hospital, will house 96 private medical-surgical patient rooms, 40 intensive care unit beds and office space.
An existing pedestrian bridge between the VA hospital and Tampa-based University of South Florida will be partially demolished and reconfigured to facilitate access to the new tower.
“We are thrilled for this project to get started so that our veterans can enjoy the private rooms they deserve,” said Joe Battle, the Tampa VA hospital’s director, according to the Tampa Bay Times. “Their care and comfort is our top priority, and private rooms are essential to a therapeutic, healing environment.”
Construction is expected to finish in 2021.
