The project will add rooms to the emergency department, increase the number of intensive care unit beds and expand the parking garage. In addition, the ED will be moved to the ground floor, and the ICU will be remodeled to take up two floors.

The neighborhood where Fort Sanders is located is designated a National Register of Historic Places District, so the city must review any proposed construction. Covenant Health received unanimous approval from the Historic Zoning Commission for its project.

“The necessary expansion of Fort Sanders Regional will mean significant improvements in the availability of health care services in downtown Knoxville and the region,” a statement from Covenant Health reads, according to Knox News.  “We look forward to continuing to work with our neighbors to achieve this goal for the community.”
