DPH recommended the council approve the project conditionally, saying their support depends on Boston Children’s not passing construction costs on to patients and insurers in a way that could threaten the Commonwealth’s cost containment goals.
Boston Children’s Hospital’s $1 billion expansion plan has been met with resistance by a number of critics. Patients’ families had advocated against expansion because the project would demolish a cherished community park frequented by sick children. The Health Policy Commission said Tuesday the expansion could lead to decreased regional market competition, causing healthcare costs to rise.
The Public Health Council is slated to vote on the expansion project Oct. 20.
