Dr. Klasko joined Rick Homans, CEO of the Tampa-Hillsborough Economic Development Corp., and others at a seminar May 13 called MediFuture 2023: Healthcare Disrupted, which focused on the potential of disruptive innovation to push Tampa to be a leading healthcare region.
Disruptive innovation, a term coined by Clayton Christensen, business professor at Harvard University, creates a new market by transforming products into more accessible, less expensive items — often through technology.
Dr. Klasko said the following is needed for the Tampa region to become a “mini-Silicon Valley” for healthcare by 2023, according to the release:
• Develop critical mass
• Learn from each other
• Invest in area businesses and innovations
• Break down silos
• Become a destination for personalized medicine, medical tourism, simulation education and clinical research
• Move boldly
A group from the seminar will meet June 26 to begin outlining an action plan for disruptive innovation in healthcare in the Tampa region, according to the release.
