USF Health CEO Disagrees With Bayfront Health, HMA Affiliation

Stephen Klasko, MD, CEO and Dean of USF Health in Tampa, Fla., does not think the recently announced deal between St. Petersburg, Fla.-based Bayfront Health System, Naples, Fla.-based Health Management Associates and Shands HealthCare in Gainesville, Fla., is a good idea for the area, according to a Tampa Bay Times report.

Under the deal, Bayfront Health and HMA will operate Bayfront Medical Center combined with a clinical, research and education affiliation with Shands HealthCare. According to the release, the clinical component of the deal builds upon Health Management’s existing relationships with hospitals throughout Florida. Bayfront will also become the regional flagship hospital for HMA’s Florida network.

“To introduce a Gainesville-based academic medical center further fragments care for the Tampa Bay community and affects our ability to be a healthcare leader,” said Dr. Klasko in a statement to the Tampa Bay Times.

Bayfront and HMA responded by saying: “We welcome all academic partners who are committed to advancing the medical sciences in this community, and that of course includes USF.”

According to the report, USF Health and Dr. Klasko have long bristled at not having a teaching hospital, calling it a handicap to competing with institutions like the University of Florida, which has Shands HealthCare.
