CHLA Innovation Studio announces winners of health tech accelerator

The Innovation Studio at Children's Hospital Los Angeles announced on Oct. 21 the five winners of its inaugural Digital Health Lab competition to develop pediatric healthcare solutions using virtual and augmented reality and mobile gaming technology.

The six-month competition began earlier this year with 18 teams. All were offered support and mentorship from CHLA to develop their mobile games, AR, VR and immersive digital health experiences to enhance pediatric care delivery. The program culminated in a Demo Day event, at which the five winners were chosen.

Here are the Digital Health Lab winners, each of whom will receive $20,000 in seed funding and the opportunity to pilot their solutions at CHLA.

  • Manatee: a voice-enabled and AI-powered therapy robot and therapy management platform.
  • Playing Forward: an immersive VR game-based entertainment intervention to improve motor skills.
  • Pulse XR: a VR application that uses MRI data to create a virtual view of a patient's heart.
  • Mila: a music-based game that combines neurologic music therapy techniques and cognitive gaming science to remotely identify and train cognitive skills.
  • CHLA Companion: an AR- and chatbot-enabled mobile application that will improve the patient and parent/caregiver experience before, during and after surgical procedures.
