The future depends on digital transformation, says Fairview CIO Sameer Badlani — here is his game plan

Sameer Badlani, MD, CIO of Minneapolis-based Fairview, is leading the health system's digital transformation.

Here, Dr. Badlani outlines why digital is so important in healthcare and how his system will leverage technology to redesign the patient experience.

Question: If 2020 is a successful year for you, what will it look like?

Sameer Badlani: Our focus for 2020 is dual disruption. Part one is reinvention, which translates to becoming more efficient with the time, talent, and the mental space it takes to deliver our value proposition. As we become more efficient, our resources can be allocated to part two of the disruption — reimagining our role in healthcare and creating a new value proposition. Every company is a digital organization whether they acknowledge it or not. We're changing the way IT has historically operated in our health system because our future success depends on this critical, digital to the core, transformation.

Q: Where will you focus most of your time and energy next year?

SB: Our focus is shifting from simply building new capabilities to designing customer experience and productivity-focused solutions. We'll reduce waste and prioritize strategic projects that focus on our digital presence and support operational efficiency, while also continuing to mature from a cybersecurity standpoint.

Q: What do you consider the biggest potential threat to your organization?

SB: Our biggest threat would be choosing not to leverage the advantage that digital processes offer for market growth and operational efficiencies. Cybersecurity also remains a top concern for all organizations. For us, this is an important pillar within patient safety.

Q: What is the most interesting initiative you have planned for 2020 that will affect the patient experience?

SB: In collaboration with M Health Fairview clinical and operational partners, we will be redesigning and developing new capabilities to provide seamless digital and physical experiences for our patients. We're launching an innovation studio to architect patient journeys, with a focus on how we can leverage expertise in design and digital to provide experiences that make a meaningful difference in the lives of our patients. Their needs must be the focus.
