Health systems facing lawsuits for data breaches

Several hospitals and health systems across the U.S. are facing lawsuits regarding data breach incidents that involved patients' protected health information. 

Here are lawsuits involving three hospitals and health systems as reported by Becker's since Oct. 6:

  1. Culver City, Calif.-based Prospect Medical Holdings is facing a lawsuit that alleges it failed to protect patients' health information from a ransomware attack.
      
  2. Three lawsuits have been filed against Grand Blanc, Mich.-based McLaren Health Care after a Russian ransomware gang allegedly stole the personal data of millions in a ransomware attack.

  3. Marietta (Ohio) Health, which operates as Memorial Health System, had to pay $1.75 million to settle a lawsuit alleging that the health system failed to protect patients' health information during a 2021 data breach.
