7 health systems affected by data breaches in May

Several health systems have reported data breach incidents that have compromised patient data and IT systems during May. 

Here are seven cyberattacks as reported by Becker's during May. 

  1. Five Steward Health Care Systems hospitals in Florida lost computer and phone service for an undisclosed period in April because of a cyberattack at Dallas-based Tenet Health System. Pinewood, Fla.-based North Shore Medical Center, Hialeah, Fla.-based Palmetto General Hospital, Coral Gables (Fla.) Hospital, Hialeah (Fla.) Hospital and Lauderdale Lakes-based Florida Medical Center's information technology systems were all affected.

  2. Sandusky, Mich.-based McKenzie Health System notified patients that an unauthorized party accessed its systems, removing files that contained patients' personal information.
     
  3. Irving, Texas-based Christus Health system was able to block a ransomware attack from cyber gang group AvosLocker.

  4. St. Louis-based Washington University School of Medicine learned that an unauthorized person gained access to certain employee email accounts between March 4 and March 28. The health system said the emails contained patient and research participant information, although an investigation was unable to determine whether the unauthorized person viewed any of the emails or attachments in the accounts.

  5. Seymour, Ind.-based Schneck Medical Center learned that an unauthorized person had removed files from its systems on Sept. 21, 2021. The files contained patient health information.

  6. Camden, N.J.-based Cooper University Health Care notified patients that an employee's email account had been accessed without authorization on Nov. 24, 2021. An investigation conducted May 10 determined that the email account contained patient health information.

  7. Del Rio, Texas -based Val Verde Regional Medical Center notified patients that a security breach may have exposed some of their personal health information.
