Boston Scientific resumes shipping most products after cyberattack

Boston Scientific has resumed shipping for the majority of its products at its major distribution centers worldwide, more than a week after an Aug. 25 cybersecurity incident disrupted its global operations.

The medical device maker said Sept. 3 it is progressively moving customer orders through fulfillment as shipping capabilities are validated and restored, though it will take time to clear the existing order backlog. The company is working to bring additional products and locations online as validation continues, with the goal of ramping up to full capacity.

Boston Scientific said it now has “growing confidence” that unauthorized access was limited to select internal-facing IT infrastructure, based on work with CrowdStrike and other third-party experts. As of its most recent updates, Boston Scientific has not said whether patient or customer data was compromised.

Customers can continue submitting orders electronically through EDI and local applications while Boston Scientific works through the backlog.

The update marks the clearest sign of recovery since the attack forced Boston Scientific into a network outage that disrupted manufacturing, order processing and new remote monitoring activations for cardiac rhythm management devices, including implantable cardioverter-defibrillators and pacemakers.
