A power outage at Intermountain Medical Center on Aug. 14 led to the transfer of several NICU patients and laboring mothers out of the Murray, Utah-based facility to other area hospitals, according to a report from The Salt Lake Tribune.
The hospital — part of Salt Lake City-based Intermountain Health — lost power at 11:15 a.m. Aug. 14 for around half an hour, prompting the transport of five NICU babies and six laboring mothers to other hospitals, Brian Pendleton, MSN, chief nursing officer of Intermountain Medical Center, said during a news conference, according to the news outlet.
“We immediately activated our emergency response system, and the generator backup came on, but then also we lost that generator power as well,” Mr. Pendleton said.
During the outage, ambulances were diverted to other hospitals. Power was fully restored by 1 p.m., though some elective procedures were delayed, hospital officials said. There were no disruptions to patients on ventilators, because the breathing machines include battery backups.
Fire and city officials are still determining what led to the power outage.
Becker’s has reached out to Intermountain Health and will update this report should more information become available.
