MunsonMedicalCenter in Traverse City, Mich., received nearly $50,000 from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Resources to fund the Prescription for Health program.
Participants receive their prescriptions in the form of a $100 voucher to an area farmer’s market as well as nutrition education.
“Area providers have expressed that their patients sometimes have a hard time accessing fruits and vegetables because costs can be high,” Munson’s community health coordinator Amanda Woods told the Record-Eagle. “This program can help area providers help their patients.”
Modeled upon a successful program done in Washtenaw County, the health initiative will target individuals with chronic health issues such as diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol.
Munson was one of seven state coalitions that received grants for the wellness plan, according to the report. The nutrition program is set to begin this spring.
