The investment — a personal donation separate from the Bill and Melida Gates Foundation — will include $50 million to the Dementia Discovery Fund and $50 million to start-up companies focused on Alzheimer’s research.

The Dementia Discovery Fund is a venture capital fund that brings together government entities and pharmaceutical companies to advance research and find treatments for dementia.

“[Dementia] is a huge problem, a growing problem, and the scale of the tragedy — even for the people who stay alive — is very high,” Mr. Gates told Reuters.

Mr. Gates said he is optimistic about finding a treatment with focused and well-funded innovation.
