The Neuroscience Institute, which becomes an official service line at Akron General April 1, will be phased in over several years with focus on a wide array of neurosurgical services. Plans for 2011 include the renovation of four operating suites that will include state-of-the-art equipment and “smart” technology.

Initially, much of the patient care at the institute will focus on disorders of the brain, spine and peripheral nerves but will later include additional neurological areas, such as non-surgical neurologic disease. The creation of the new institute will be spearheaded by three area neurosurgeons: Georges Z. Markarian, MD, who will serve as chairman; Kamel F. Muakkassa, MD; and Ghassan F. Khayyat, MD.
