Tampa (Fla.) General Hospital plans to build a hospital, clinic and medical office building in east Ybor City, a neighborhood in Tampa.

The project would expand the system’s footprint within the Tampa Medical and Research District, according to an Oct. 30 health system news release.

Tampa General intends to purchase approximately 10 acres, with an option to acquire an additional 6.45 acres. The proposed development would include a hospital and clinical offices offering primary and urgent care services. Scenarios for the two-block site also consider office space, ground-level retail, hotel and residential units.

The Tampa City Council approved a comprehensive plan amendment for parcels owned by developer Darryl Shaw, which allows for the potential of residential and commercial mixed-use development, instead of solely industrial use, the release said.

This announcement follows the October opening of a 32,000-square-foot innovation center in Ybor City, which houses Tampa General’s innovation, analytics, IT and venture capital teams.

Tampa General also recently shared plans to build a new hospital on a 53-acre lot in Citrus County, Fla.

An estimated cost of the project was not available.
