The design phase for Syracuse, N.Y.-based SUNY Upstate University Hospital’s new $450 million hospital annex is set to kick off, according to a Dec. 2 news release from New York Gov. Kathy Hochul’s office.

Ms. Hochul confirmed SUNY Upstate University Hospital was receiving the funds in early May, which will help build an expanded emergency department and burn unit.

“At a time when New Yorkers are feeling the uncertainty of rising premiums and federal funding cuts, resources like SUNY Upstate Medical are all the more important,” Ms. Hochul said in the release. “And for generations of Central New Yorkers, this new facility will be a reliable source of care for decades to come.”

Funds for the hospital annex were proposed in late 2024 by the SUNY board of trustees. They were approved by Ms. Hochul and the state legislature for the fiscal 2026 enacted budget.
