New York Gov. Kathy Hochul shared Dec. 10 that the design phase is set to kick off for a $1.1 billion investment at SUNY Downstate’s hospital in New York City’s Brooklyn borough.

The investment, which Ms. Hochul announced in mid-June, will repair the hospital’s infrastructure, expand the emergency department, modernize inpatient rooms and create a new hospital annex, including an ambulatory surgery center that expands oncology and cardiology services, according to a Dec. 10 news release.

“Every New Yorker deserves access to high-quality health and medical care, and this investment at SUNY Downstate will ensure that Brooklyn will have a world-class institution available,” Ms. Hochul said. “I am pleased that investments at SUNY Downstate are moving forward and congratulate all of my colleagues who helped make this possible.”

The project is backed by $750 million in state capital funding and SUNY’s expected $50 million annual capital allocation for the hospital. It’s part of two concurrent projects: a renovation project to modernize the existing hospital and the construction of the hospital annex with an ambulatory surgery center.

The news comes after Ms. Hochul’s office said in early December that the design phase for Syracuse, N.Y.-based SUNY Upstate University Hospital’s $450 million hospital annex is also set to kick off.

“At a time when New Yorkers are feeling the uncertainty of rising premiums and federal funding cuts, resources like SUNY Upstate Medical are all the more important,” Ms. Hochul said in a Dec. 2 news release. “And for generations of Central New Yorkers, this new facility will be a reliable source of care for decades to come.”
