O’Fallon, Ill.-based HSHS St. Elizabeth’s Hospital plans to invest $116 million to grow its hospital campus, including expanding the emergency department and adding a new outpatient surgery center.
The infrastructure expansion project will modernize 35,000 square feet of space and add 19,000 square feet of new clinical space, according to a Sept. 15 news release from the hospital. The project will add 32 inpatient medical/surgical unit beds and eight ED treatment rooms. It will also add a new CT scanner and relocated X-Ray machines in the ED, as well as a new cafeteria, servery and kitchen area.
Construction on the outpatient surgery center and medical office building began this summer and is expected to be completed by October 2026, according to the release. The three-story 70,000-square-foot building will include four operating suites, two additional procedure rooms, six post-anesthesia care rooms and 16 prep and recovery stations. It will also include diagnostic imaging, including open MRI, X-ray, and mammography.
“The combination of these two projects will relieve a lot of the daily throughput challenges,” St. Elizabeth’s COO Michael Janis said in the release. “The hospital will also be better equipped to handle seasonal surges, like flu, that traditionally bring added patient volume. This will create a less stressful environment for staff and improve patient flow.”
