Cleveland Clinic to open hospital in London in 2021

Cleveland Clinic is expected to admit its first patient to its 205-bed London hospital in 2021, according to

The health system signed a 123 ½ -year lease and received approval to begin renovations on a six-story, 198,000-square-foot structure in January 2017. Officials expect to finish construction by the end of 2020 and to officially open the hospital in early 2021.

"We'll be essentially taking our Cleveland Clinic culture and our Cleveland Clinic care model to London and working to integrate it with the local London healthcare dynamics," said Brian Donley, MD, who was named CEO of Cleveland Clinic London earlier this month. "A big part of this project is for us to attract the great talent in healthcare that exists in a worldwide fashion. The more international you are, the larger talent pool that you can pull from. ... The larger the talent pool we can pull from, the better caregivers we have."

Once completed, the hospital will host full imaging and neurological suites, contain eight operating rooms, and offer specialty services for general surgery, cardiology and neurology, among other features. Officials also reportedly plan to build a medical office building near the hospital in 2020 to house outpatient and physicians' visits, according to the report.

The London hospital will be Cleveland Clinic's third healthcare facility outside the U.S. The health system also maintains facilities in Toronto and Abu Dhabi, and is reportedly considering building a hospital in China.
