45 trade groups call on Trump to stray from Chinese tariffs: 4 things to know

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the National Retail Federation and 43 other U.S. trade associations urged President Donald Trump to avoid tariffs on China, Reuters reports.

Here are four things to know.

1. President Trump's administration is said to be prepping tariffs on China's IT, telecom and consumer product industries.

2. Forty-five U.S. trade organizations wrote a letter to President Trump March 18 arguing the possible tariffs could increase the cost of consumer products, eliminate jobs and lower financial markets.

3. "We urge the administration not to impose tariffs and to work with the business community to find an effective, but measured, solution to China's protectionist trade policies and practices that protects American jobs and competitiveness," the groups wrote, according to Reuters. "Tariffs would be particularly harmful."

4. The groups, which represent some of the largest U.S. companies, urged President Trump to work alongside allies toward addressing Chinese trade tactics. While they expressed apprehension about China's trade policies, the associations argued U.S. tariffs could separate the U.S. from its allies, allowing the allies to replace its presence in China.
