The charge will be led by the nonprofit Vice President Biden plans to create around the White House’s Cancer Moonshot Initiative, which launched last January. The aim of the moonshot was to inject funds, promote participation in clinical trials and encourage data sharing among researchers to drive rapid improvement in cancer care.
At the J.P. Morgan Healthcare Conference, Vice President Biden said the nonprofit will potentially be named the Biden Cancer Initiative, according to the STAT report. In addition to addressing other issues, such as clinical trial participation, the nonprofit will put an emphasis on drug costs, he said.
“We’re going to convene a national conversation with pharmaceutical companies — many of you who are here … biotech companies and others — to ensure patients can afford treatments,” Vice President Biden said, according to STAT. “Too many Americans are forced to sell their homes, to go into bankruptcy, so their loved ones can get care and hope for a cure. This needs to change while still not undermining the profit motive making sure there’s a genuine reward for effort.”
