On Dec. 3, 2013, the two systems signed a letter of intent to affiliate. Under the agreement, Allegiance would become a member of UMHS, while UMHS would invest capital and expand clinical programs at Allegiance.
However, Allegiance officials sent a letter to hospital employees Dec. 8 informing them the board had allowed the exclusivity agreement with UMHS to expire and that Allegiance plans to continue to explore its partnership or affiliation options, which could still include a deal with UMHS, according to the report.
