Northwell names eastern market leaders: 6 things to know

Northwell Health has made several leadership changes within its eastern market, which includes eight hospitals and 300 physician practice sites.

The New Hyde Park, N.Y.-based health system announced the changes in an Oct. 20 news release.

Six changes to know:

1. Steve Bello, a physician assistant, has been named executive vice president of business development at Northwell Health. He succeeds Debbie Schiff, who recently retired, and will lead the system’s efforts to expand its network and develop new revenue streams.

2. Kerri Anne Scanlon, MSN, RN, was appointed executive vice president and president of Northwell’s eastern market. Ms. Scanlon most recently served as president of Northwell’s Glen Cove, Syosset and Plainview hospitals. 

3. Maria Carney, MD, an internist, geriatrician and palliative care physician, was appointed president at Glen Cove Hospital. Dr. Carney joined Northwell in 2012 and is executive director of the Northwell Aging Institute and chief of the Division of Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine. 

4. Michael Scarpelli was appointed president of Plainview and Syosset hospitals. He most recently served as president of Northwell’s South Oaks Hospital in Amityville, N.Y., and Zucker Hillside Hospital in Glen Oaks, N.Y., and also led the health system’s behavioral health service line.

5. Deepa Avula was selected as the new president of South Oaks and Zucker Hillside hospitals and leader of Northwell’s behavioral health service line. Ms. Avula joined the health system in 2024 and previously served as the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene’s executive deputy commissioner of the Division of Mental Hygiene.

6. Michele Frankel was appointed deputy eastern market president. Ms. Frankel has served as CFO of Northwell’s eastern market since 2017.
