Mary Beckerle, PhD, plans to step down as CEO of Huntsman Cancer Institute, part of Salt Lake City-based University of Utah Health, effective Sept. 1.

Dr. Beckerle has served as CEO since 2006, according to a July 9 health system news release. She also serves as associate vice president of cancer affairs at the university and oversees all cancer programs, including clinical care, research, community outreach and education.

Brad Cairns, PhD, Huntsman’s head of academic affairs and a professor of oncological sciences at the university, will succeed Dr. Beckerle. Dr. Cairns has been on the institute’s leadership team for 15 years.

Under Dr. Beckerle’s leadership, the institute became the region’s only comprehensive cancer center designated by the National Cancer Institute. She also oversaw two expansions of its cancer hospital, increasing inpatient capacity from 50 to 148 beds, the release said.

Huntsman Cancer Institute includes 276 research teams and more than 4,000 staff members.
